Rich Brown
General Partner

At Aurora, Rich focuses on new investment opportunities in the information technology sector, including Internet infrastructure, software and wireless companies. He also works closely with Aurora’s IT portfolio companies, pulling from his broad background to help them with a number of strategic, operational and product issues. He follows industry trends to help companies react to or take advantage of challenges and opportunities. Rich also helps them expand their network of customers, partners and investors.

Prior to joining Aurora in 2000, Rich was senior associate at Safeguard Scientifics, a public venture capital holding company, where he was actively involved in all aspects of making new investments and working closely with portfolio companies in the areas of IT services, enterprise software and communications.  Before joining the venture capital business in 1997, Rich spent 10 years in operating roles.  He was director of business development and senior product manager of fiber optic products at General Instrument, a broadband communications equipment company.   Rich also held marketing, engineering and management positions at Sony, Westinghouse and DuPont.

Rich currently serves on the Boards of Covelight Systems, Foresight, Synchris, Nextreme Thermal Solutions, Unitrends and WiDeFi and is a Board observer at VetCentric. He previously served on the Boards of GadgetSpace (acquired by InPhonic; NASDAQ: INPC) and was a Board observer at Blackboard (NASDAQ: BBBB) and InPhonic (NASDAQ: INPC).

Rich holds a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from Duke University and a MBA from The Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College.

Rich’s investment philosophy: “When investing in start-ups, writing the check is only the tip of the iceberg. You have to be willing to work with the entrepreneur to establish key milestones and roll up your sleeves to help them meet those milestones.”
